Dr. Akins grew up in Dublin, Georgia, and after earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, he worked as an engineer for nearly seven years before pursuing his passion for dentistry. He attended the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and later completed his pediatric dental residency. During his residency, he met his wife, Anna, who has been an invaluable partner in his dental practice.

After completing his residency, Dr. Akins and his wife settled in Atlanta, where he worked as an associate in a large pediatric dental practice. However, they eventually decided to open their own practice in Aiken, a city that holds a special place in their hearts. Dr. Akins had previously visited Aiken during his pediatric dental residency and fell in love with the town's charm and sense of community.
